Key points to remember

  • Friction is the force exerted by the touching surfaces that opposes the motion when one of two objects in contact moves (or tries to move) over the other.
  • Static friction between two surfaces is different from a force applied from outside — it is the surfaces' own reaction, matching the applied force up to a limit.
  • The force that must be applied to just start an object moving equals the limiting friction.
  • Limiting friction depends on two things: (1) the nature of the touching surfaces, (2) the normal reaction.
  • The area of the contact surfaces does NOT affect limiting friction.
  • The friction acting on an object that is already moving is dynamic friction.

    Textbook Question · Ch.5, p.115

Why is it dangerous to drive a vehicle with worn-out tyre treads on rainy days?
    Step 1

What do tread grooves do? — Normally, the tyre and road need direct contact for good grip. When it rains, a film of water forms on the road — the grooves push that water sideways and out of the way, letting the tyre touch the road directly.

    Step 2

What happens once the treads wear out? — There's no way for the water to escape anymore. A thin film of water stays trapped between the tyre and the road — the tyre never actually touches the road directly!

Key idea: water has very low friction (it's very slippery). So as long as that thin film is there, friction drops sharply.
Final answer: Worn treads can't push away the water, so a film of water forms between tyre and road, cutting friction drastically — the vehicle can skid and lose grip and control, which is dangerous.

      Dynamic (kinetic) friction is always slightly less than limiting friction — so once motion starts, less force is needed to sustain it.

      Answer: B. A bicycle wheel's axle

      A bicycle wheel's axle uses ball bearings so it rolls instead of sliding — this is a direct example of using bearings to reduce friction.

    5. Why does a smooth (polished) surface cause less friction than a rough one?

      • A Because it weighs less

      • D It doesn't — roughness makes no difference
      Show the answer

      Answer: B. Because it has fewer microscopic bumps that catch on the other surfaceமற்ற மேற்பரப்பில் சிக்கிக்கொள்ள குறைவான நுண் மேடு-பள்ளங்கள் இருப்பதால்මොකද අනෙක් පෘෂ්ඨයේ කොකු ගැසෙන ක්ෂුද්‍ර ගැටිති එයට අඩු නිසා

      Every surface has microscopic bumps and dips. Smoother surfaces have fewer/smaller ones to catch against the other surface, so less friction results.

    Questions about Friction

Is Friction in the G.C.E. O/L Physics syllabus?

Yes. Friction is a Grade 10 unit of G.C.E. Ordinary Level Physics in Sri Lanka, and STEM Cloud teaches it in the same order as the course map.

What are the key points of Friction?

Friction is the force exerted by the touching surfaces that opposes the motion when one of two objects in contact moves (or tries to move) over the other. Static friction between two surfaces is different from a force applied from outside — it is the surfaces' own reaction, matching the applied force up to a limit. The force that must be applied to just start an object moving equals the limiting friction.

What are the common mistakes in Friction?

Surface area does not affect friction! Whether the object rests on its large face or small face, limiting friction stays the same. Don't wrongly assume "bigger area = more friction.". Static friction is not always at its maximum. It matches whatever force you apply exactly — it only increases up to the limiting friction value. Kinetic (dynamic) friction is slightly less than limiting friction. That's why a heavy object is hardest to start moving, but slightly easier to keep sliding once it has started. Friction is not always harmful. Walking, gripping, and braking are all impossible without it — don't treat it as something to be "eliminated entirely"; it should be reduced or increased depending on the situation.

Can I study Friction in Tamil or Sinhala?

Yes. Every STEM Cloud lesson is in Tamil, English and Sinhala, and you can switch the language at any time from the lesson header.
